How Often Should You Schedule Exams & Cleanings?

For most adults, we recommend scheduling dental cleanings and exams every 6 months. However, Dr. Rapske may recommend more frequent visits depending on your individual needs and risk factors.

These risk factors could include underlying health conditions, medications, smoking habits, and susceptibility to cavities. During your consultation, we’ll discuss these factors and create a personalized plan to optimize your oral health.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

We provide comprehensive exams at Deerfoot Dental Centre and want our patients to know what to expect when they visit us. Your appointment will include:

  • A comprehensive exam: Dr. Rapske will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues, checking for cavities, gum disease, or any other potential concerns.
  • Professional cleaning: Our hygienist will use specialized tools and techniques to remove plaque and tartar buildup, leaving your teeth feeling smooth and fresh.
  • Personalized advice: We’ll discuss your oral hygiene routine and offer personalized recommendations to optimize your at-home care.

Staying on Top of Exams & Cleanings

Neglecting your oral health can have serious consequences. If left untreated, plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gum disease.

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and surrounding bone that can cause redness, swelling, bleeding, and even tooth loss in severe cases. In addition, gum disease has been linked to other health problems like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Regular dental cleanings and exams help to prevent these problems and keep your smile healthy for a lifetime.

Invest in Your Smile, Invest in Your Health

IV Sedation for Dental Surgery

Feeling anxious about oral surgery is completely normal, but you don’t have to let fear hold you back from getting the care you need. At Deerfoot Dental Centre, we offer IV sedation to help you feel calm and deeply relaxed throughout your procedure.

Our experienced team closely monitors you every step of the way, allowing you to focus on recovery while we focus on your smile.

Sleep Apnea Screenings

If you’re frequently tired during the day, snore loudly, or have been told you stop breathing in your sleep, these could be signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a common condition that affects breathing during sleep.

As part of our general dentistry services, we can screen for oral and airway signs that may suggest sleep-disordered breathing. If appropriate, we can work with your physician or a sleep specialist and recommend a custom oral appliance, a fitted device worn during sleep, designed to help keep your airway open while you rest.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry

How often should I get a dental exam and cleaning?

For most adults, we recommend a dental exam and cleaning every six months. Dr. Rapske may suggest more frequent visits depending on your individual needs and risk factors, such as underlying health conditions, medications, smoking, or a higher tendency toward cavities. At your visit we can discuss what schedule is right for you.

What happens during a dental exam and cleaning?

Your appointment includes three parts: a comprehensive exam, where Dr. Rapske checks your teeth, gums, and oral tissues for cavities, gum disease, or other concerns; a professional cleaning, where our hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup; and personalized advice on your at-home oral hygiene routine.

Why are regular dental cleanings so important?

Regular exams and cleanings help prevent problems before they start. Left untreated, plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Gum disease has also been linked to broader health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, so consistent care protects more than just your smile.

What are the warning signs of gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and surrounding bone. Common signs include redness, swelling, and bleeding gums, and in more severe cases it can lead to tooth loss. Because early gum disease is often painless, routine exams are the most reliable way to catch it early.

Do you offer sedation for anxious patients?

Yes. Feeling anxious about dental treatment is completely normal, and we offer IV sedation to help you feel calm and deeply relaxed during procedures such as oral surgery. Our experienced team monitors you closely throughout, so you can focus on recovery while we take care of your smile.

Can a dentist help with snoring or sleep apnea?

As part of our general dentistry services, we can screen for oral and airway signs that may point to sleep-disordered breathing, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. If appropriate, we can work with your physician or a sleep specialist and recommend a custom oral appliance worn during sleep to help keep your airway open.
