What to Expect Before and After Your Oral Sedation Appointment

Patient recovering after an oral sedation dental appointment

Once you’ve decided to move forward with oral sedation, the practical details matter — what to arrange, what to expect on the day, and what recovery actually looks like. Here’s a full walkthrough.

This is general information, and every patient’s situation is different. Please contact our team for guidance specific to you.

Before your appointment

Your dentist will give you specific instructions ahead of your appointment, including exactly when to take your sedative and any other preparation needed for your procedure. The most important thing to arrange in advance is a ride — you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment, since you won’t be able to drive yourself.

The morning (or night before) of your appointment

Follow your dentist’s instructions exactly for when to take your sedative — timing varies by patient and procedure, so this isn’t something to guess at or adjust on your own. You may also be given instructions about eating or drinking beforehand, depending on your procedure.

Arriving for your appointment

Have your ride drop you off, since you’ll already be feeling the effects of the sedative by the time you arrive. Wear comfortable clothing, and give yourself a little extra time so you’re not rushing while sedated.

During your procedure

You’ll remain conscious and able to respond throughout, but deeply relaxed — many patients describe the procedure as feeling like it passed quickly. Our team monitors you throughout to make sure you stay comfortable and safe.

Right after your procedure

You’ll spend a short time recovering in the office before you’re cleared to leave. You may still feel groggy or “out of it” — this is normal and expected, and it’s exactly why you’ll need your ride waiting.

The rest of the day

Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. The sedative affects your coordination and judgment for several hours, so avoid driving, operating machinery, making important decisions, or drinking alcohol until it’s fully worn off. Many patients choose to rest at home for the remainder of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a ride, or can I take a taxi/rideshare alone?

You’ll need a responsible adult with you, not just transportation — someone who can help you get home and be with you as the sedative wears off, not just drop you off.

How long until I feel back to normal?

This varies by patient, but plan for the effects to last several hours — your dentist will give you a general timeframe based on your specific sedative and procedure.

Can I go back to work the same day?

Most patients plan to take the rest of the day off, since the sedative affects coordination and judgment for several hours. Your dentist can advise based on your specific situation.

Will I need to arrange childcare or other responsibilities for the day?

It’s a good idea, since you won’t be able to drive or fully attend to responsibilities that need your full alertness for several hours afterward.
